Events in Mallorca
Mallorca has a lot of events and festivals that are spread across the whole year. Colourful, festive street parties are as much a part of the calendar as the more sombre religious celebrations with elaborately staged processions.
Sporting events in Mallorca
Mild winter temperatures and the Weather in Mallorca mean that outdoor sporting events in Mallorca take place all year round. At the end of January, Cycling in Mallorca professionals traditionally meet for the Tour de Mallorca. The race consists of four individual stages, each completed over the course of a single day. This is followed by a cycle race for amateur cyclists in March. Every year in June, in the Bay of Palma, the Superyacht Cup takes place, in which some of the largest sailing ships in the world compete.
Participating boats must have a minimum length of 24 m. The sailing regatta Copa del Rey Mapfre also takes place in the bay of Palma at the beginning of August. Members of the Spanish royal family regularly take part in the sailing regatta. In autumn, the MM-Golf-Trophy headlines the sporting calendar. The Golf in Mallorca tournament takes place on the 18-hole course of Golf de Andratx.
Religious events
January 6th is the first major event of the new year. Epiphany, the celebration of the Three Kings or Magi is a religious festival accompanied by a parade through the old town of Palma. This is almost more important than Christmas or Easter in Mallorca in Spain and is when children receive their Christmas gifts. Holy Week processions also take place in numerous places in the week leading up to Mallorcan Holidays. One of the most famous events is the Procession of Blood in Palma de Mallorca, which on Maundy Thursday parades through the streets of the old town.
On Good Friday Christ's death on the cross is symbolically recreated in churches all over the island. All Saints Day is a holiday in Catholic Mallorca. Festivals do not take place on this day, but the bakeries in Mallorca fill their displays with rosaries filled to the brim with sweets. At Christmas, the palms in the pedestrian streets and on the beach promenades are decorated with garlands of light and shop windows are decorated with cribs and angels.
Cultural highlights in the year
Cultural events take place in Mallorca from March to November. With street parties, live music and market stalls, the "Dia de les Illes Balears", i.e. Independence Day, is celebrated in many towns and villages on March 1st. On International Museum Day in May, art galleries and Museums in Mallorca open their doors free of charge to the public. In many Mallorca's Ports, St. Peter's Day is celebrated in June. The event will be accompanied by a boat parade and fireworks in honour of the patron saint of fishermen. The Binissalem wine-growing region celebrates the end of the vintage in September. Tastings are held at the various wine festivals and groups of musicians perform as the crowds dance.
Folk festivals and music events
The Spring Festival in Magaluf is a fixed event on the Mallorcan calendar each year. In addition to street parades you can see people walking over hot coals, a fireworks display and the traditional gatherings of the ‘Dimonis' (dancing fire breathing dragons and demons). All over the island, the Fiesta de Sant Joan is celebrated in June prominently featuring "Dimonis" and open-air concerts in many places. In April the International Folk Dance Festival takes place in Palma de Mallorca.
In May, the folk festival Moros i Cristians (reenactment of the Moorish conquest and the Christian reconquest) follows in Port de Sollér. Every year, the International Jazz Festival takes place on the Southeast coast Mallorca at Cala d’Or on the southeast coast of Mallorca. Live bands perform in the bars, clubs and pubs and hopeful young artists present their own compositions to a wide audience.
