Balearic Government's Efforts to Improve Tourism Regulations
The Balearic government is actively engaged in enhancing tourism regulations. They are in the process of amending the law governing public misconduct, aiming to establish stricter penalties.
Jaume Bauzà, the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sports, aspires to conclude these revisions before the beginning of next year's tourist season. A significant step in this commitment involves the formation of a subcommittee representing business interests, labor unions, and local community organisations.
Addressing Perceived Shortcomings
The primary drive behind these changes is to address perceived shortcomings in the tourism sector, particularly in areas like Magaluf and Playa de Palma, which have received unfavourable publicity, particularly in British and German media, impacting the image of these essential markets.
Mostly concerning are instances of sexual misconduct. It is emphasised that reports like these should not lead to stigmatisation, as these offences aren't limited to tourists and can occur in various areas within Mallorca.
Another aspect of criticism relate to the lack of uniformity in existing regulations. Discrepancies are noted, with some streets in the same are being subject to more stringent regulations while others are not, or where the sale of alcohol is allowed in one spot but restricted in another on the same street.
A Goal to Impose Stricter Penalties
Bauzà underscores that the impending changes will entail more severe sanctions for antisocial conduct, even though this represents the most radical and legally complex aspect of the change. The goal is to impose stricter penalties, particularly on offenders, with the intention of sustaining a wholesome tourism environment.
Despite some incidents during the current tourist season, Bauzà declares that the season has predominantly showed positive outcomes. There has been an escalation in police interventions targeting excessive tourism, with increased oversight, and the public disclosure of penalties imposed on transgressing businesses, a measure that has proven effective. The Balearic government envisions a more sustainable and respectful future within the tourism sector.
