Our 3 favourite diving sites around Mallorca
Mallorca, with its breathtaking turquoise waters and secluded calas, is a destination that captivates the hearts of millions of visitors year-round. However, amidst the allure of its picturesque coastlines, the beautiful snorkelling opportunities and the delights of its cuisine, the island's stunning scuba diving spots often remain overlooked. But this is a hidden gem that only enriches the experiences of those divers who do return time and again to explore the treasures beneath the waves.
The jewel of the Mediterranean
Mallorca is nestled in the tranquil embrace of the Mediterranean Sea, it’s often referred to as 'the crown jewel' of Spain's Balearic Islands. Its popularity as a tourist destination is well-deserved, thanks to its rich history, exquisite wineries, and, of course, the many secluded calas or coves that dot its shoreline. Yet, beneath the waves, the island has another world waiting to be discovered, a world steeped in mystery and history.
Unveiling the popular diving sites
Mallorca's underwater world is a realm of wonder for divers of all levels. Here, we'll explore some of the island's most captivating diving sites. One of them, the Island of Malgrats. Located off the southwest coast, the Island of Malgrats is a jewel within the dedicated Malgrats Island Marine Reserve. This wall dive site offers a gentle descent from 30ft (10m) to 118ft (36m), making it suitable for divers of all levels. A short boat ride from the Santa Ponsa coast, it's a popular choice for underwater enthusiasts.
Punta de L’avançada is another stunning dive site, also suitable for divers of all levels. A short boat trip from the port de Pollença reveals cool and tranquil waters. Descend into the turquoise depths to a maximum of 40ft (12m). Explore the sandy bottom, where you can spot cuttlefish, octopus, rays, and even perfectly camouflaged seahorses. The vast fields of seagrass offer shelter to a variety of shellfish, crabs, and juvenile fish.
Lastly is the “Swiss Cheese”, a dive site with character. Located on the eastern side of the island, within the Cala Ratjada Marine Reserve, the Swiss Cheese dive site is a unique underwater landscape. Starting from an island (or rock) above sea level, it plunges to depths of 100ft (30m). As the name suggests, the site resembles a block of Swiss cheese, with perforations that form intricate holes and tunnels, creating an enchanting labyrinth for divers to explore.
Scuba dive with the experts around the island
Mallorca boasts a range of top-notch scuba diving schools catering to visitors from all corners of the island. Here are a few: Mero Diving located in Cala Ratjada, ZOEA Scuba Diving Center in Santa Ponca, Mallorca Diving Adventure in Port d’Andratx, Scuba Mallorca PADI 5 Star IDC & Tramuntana Diving & Adventure in Port de Pollença along with many more around the island. These schools offer a range of courses for divers of all levels, from beginners to advanced, ensuring a safe and memorable experience.
While the allure of Mallorca's underwater world is undeniable, it's essential to prioritise safety above all else. Never embark on a scuba diving expedition alone; always dive with a reputable diving school. The guidance of experienced instructors that knows each area well, ensures that you can safely explore Mallorca under water. Dive safe!
