Revelers Disrupt Santa Catalina: Is Palma Turning into the Next Magaluf?
Palma, the charming capital of Mallorca, is renowned for its lively atmosphere, enchanting streets, and vibrant communities. However, recent events have triggered concerns among residents, leaving them questioning whether a beloved neighbourhood is transforming into a new Magaluf.
A Saturday night street party
Last Saturday night, approximately one hundred individuals congregated around a terrace located at Carrer Fàbrica, near the intersection with Carrer Comte de Barcelona. Their merriment was characterised by loud singing and boisterous revelry, transforming the quaint cobbled streets into a nocturnal carnival.
Residents up in arms
The noisy celebrations were anything but appreciated by the local residents, particularly the Associació Barri Cìvic de Santa Catalina i es Jonquet, the neighbourhood association. In response to the disturbance, the association took to its official Twitter account to voice their disapproval. In a stark message, they warned, "We are on our way to becoming Magaluf."
The association further underscored its concern by sharing a video, filmed by concerned neighbours, to highlight the disruptive revelry. Upon contacting the local police, the residents were informed that a police unit would be sent when available, leaving them uncertain if an official presence was ever established.
Terraces profit amidst chaos
One of the more troubling aspects among the residents is that local terraces are making a lot of money from these gatherings. The neighbourhood association says these parties go against the rules, which say that terraces can only serve lunch and dinner, not host loud events or shows. However, it seems like people are slowly accepting these rule-breaking events, and this has residents worried about the future of the neighbourhood.
A plea to the Town Hall
The association has diligently sought intervention from the Town Hall, aware of their ongoing efforts and request for patience. Nevertheless, the situation continues to worsen, with a once-peaceful neighbourhood now teeming with spots of trouble. In the words of the association, "This is a jungle."
As Santa Catalina grapples with this distress, residents remain concerned about the future harmony and tranquillity of Palma, questioning whether the spirit of the community is under threat, gradually yielding to the influences of a very different kind of neighbourhood.
