Balearics Exhibit Better Road Safety During Distracted Driving Campaign

A recent campaign aimed at reducing distractions among drivers has yielded noteworthy results in the Balearic Islands. Between October 9 and 15, a nationwide initiative focused on tackling distracted driving, particularly the use of mobile phones. While the national average indicates that 2.7% of drivers faced fines for various distractions, the Balearics outperformed the rest of Spain.

Balearic Islands' Exceptional Performance

During the campaign, over 23,000 vehicles underwent rigorous inspections by the Guardia Civil and local police in the Balearics. Surprisingly, only 239 fines were issued in the region, accounting for just over one percent of the total vehicles checked.

The majority of these inspections, approximately 18,577, were conducted by the Guardia Civil's Traffic division. In nearly half of the cases where fines were issued, the drivers were penalised for using their phones while driving. In contrast, local police controls revealed that 72% of infringements were related to phone use.

Alternative Distractions and Substance Abuse

Drivers in the Balearics exhibited a remarkably low rate of other distractions resulting in fines. These distractions included wearing headphones connected to sound systems. Interestingly, with the Guardia Civil controls, about a quarter of the fined drivers also tested positive for alcohol or drugs.

Emphasis on Road Safety

The data from this campaign indicates that road safety awareness among drivers in the Balearics is notably higher than the national average. These efforts contribute to making the region's roads safer for everyone and underline the significance of campaigns focused on minimising distractions while driving.
