Tramuntana Mountains in Uproar: Escalating War Against Illegal Motorbike Races
Amid an ongoing controversy around motorbike races in Tramuntana Mountains, the ire of local residents intensifies. Their burgeoning frustration culminated in a vehement refutation of a report issued by the Traffic Directorate (DGT).
Irked Residents Reject Report
Recent findings by the DGT indicated that vehicles traveling on the MA-10 main road in the Tramuntana Mountains had an average speed of 35 kilometres per hour. This claim led to a substantial backlash from the Indignats MA-10 residents group.
Drawing on their long-standing campaign against the distracting noise and illegal races energized by rowdy motorbikers, these residents revved up the heat. "No more deception. We demand action!" they contended, expressing their displeasure towards both the report and the authorities indirectly referenced therein.
Mounting Evidence Against Motorcyclists
During the debate in Palma, the group presented a video featuring testimonies from residents across various municipalities in the mountains, including Banyalbufar, Estellencs, Fornalutx, and Soller. The video underscored how motorcyclists behave on the MA-10, and provided their statistics which are drastically higher than the rest of Mallorca — boasting an alarming accident rate 800% higher.
Sandwiched between the appalling statistics and distressing testimonies was the observation of a bus driver who routinely journeys between Soller and Alcudia. "It's treacherous! They invade the opposite lane. What we need are cameras and radars for stringent monitoring."
Motorcyclists Add Fuel To Fire
An unexpectedly damning disclosure came from a motorcyclist who admitted, "90% of us swap the exhaust pipe for a noisier one before hitting the road. I've been doing this for 25 years and never received a fine."
Coupled with this admission, the unfortunate fact remains that the DGT's report did acknowledge noise as a significant issue. Consequently, the residents argue for the installation of sound level meters and the designation of the mountains as an acoustic protection zone. One resident pointed out, "In these zones, the fines can skyrocket up to 12,000 euros. I doubt any motorcyclist would want that kind of weekly expense."
Avalanche of Protests on The Horizon
The residents vow to create an "avalanche" of protests to disrupt the status quo. As evident from the mounting dissent and exigencies for change, the war against illegal motorbike races in Tramuntana Mountains is far from over.
