The Evolution of Estadi de Son Moix: Mallorca’s Iconic Football Stadium
Estadi de Son Moix, also known as Estadio de Son Moix in Spanish, is a football stadium that has been undergoing significant renovations in the picturesque Spanish city of Palma, located on the stunning island of Mallorca, within the Balearic Islands. In this article, we'll delve into the history, transformations, and significance of this stadium, which has been an integral part of Mallorca's sporting landscape.
History: A Home for RCD Mallorca
Since its construction in 1999, Estadi de Son Moix has served as the proud home ground of the Spanish football club, RCD Mallorca. Prior to moving to Son Moix, RCD Mallorca played their matches at the Estadio Lluis Sitjar, which was subsequently utilized by the club's B-team until 2007 before it fell into disuse. This stadium, with its ongoing renovation, has the capacity to host a maximum of 23,142 spectators in its seating areas.
Sponsorship Chronicles
In August 2010, the hotel group, Iberostar, became the official naming sponsor of the stadium, a partnership that was set to continue until 2013. This sponsorship deal was later extended until the summer of 2017. However, as negotiations continued, Iberostar chose not to agree to the significantly increased financial demands of the club. Consequently, the stadium was renamed Estadi de Son Moix starting from the summer of 2017.
In June 2020, the stadium underwent another name change, becoming the Visit Mallorca Estadi, an effort to boost tourism on the island during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. This agreement initially lasted until the end of the 2021/22 season but was subsequently extended until the end of the 2022/23 season. However, concerns arose regarding excessive promotion of the island as a tourist destination, leading to a suspension of the partnership. The Markenname des Tourismusverbands was dropped following resistance from one of the three involved parties.
A New Era of Renovation
In April 2022, RCD Mallorca approved the stadium's refurbishment plans. The most significant changes include the removal of the athletics track, originally installed for the 1999 Summer Universiade, and the installation of a roof over the opposite stand. Without the plastic track, the oval interior becomes a rectangular field, significantly improving the viewing experience. These alterations were approved by the city of Palma, and the renovation process saw an extension of the stadium lease between the city and the football club.
Initially, the RCD signed a 25-year lease agreement in 1999 when they moved into the stadium. The new agreement extends the lease for an astonishing 40 years, until the year 2064. The first phase of the renovation, including the removal of the athletics track, began after the 2021/22 season and is set to conclude before the 2022/23 season commences. Once finished, the stands will be only about eight meters away from the edge of the playing field, a remarkable reduction from the previous distance, which was at times up to forty meters. A roof is also planned for the Sol stand, mirroring the one over the main stand. These extensive renovations are scheduled to be completed by 2024, at which point all spectator areas will be covered.
Sponsorship Revival
In early December 2022, the Consell de Mallorca and the football club reached an agreement for a new sponsorship deal for the 2022/23 season. This sponsorship is set to bring RCD Mallorca a maximum of 1.815 million euros. The stadium will now bear the name Estadi Mallorca Son Moix.
With the history, transformations, and latest developments in mind, Estadi de Son Moix emerges as a symbol of resilience and adaptability, reflecting the evolution of both the football club and the island itself.
