Obtain a new driving license in Mallorca
Losing your driving license can be a stressful experience, but if you're a resident in Spain, there's a straightforward process to obtain a replacement license on the island of Mallorca. Whether your license was lost, stolen, or has simply worn out, this guide will walk you through the steps to secure a new one.
1. Determine Eligibility:
Before you start the replacement process, ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria. You can apply for a replacement driving license in Spain if:
- Your lost or worn-out license was issued by an EU Member State or an EEA country (Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway).
- You are ordinarily resident in Spain.
2. Initiate the Replacement Process:
To begin the replacement process, you'll need to visit a police station or Traffic Office in person. Here's what you need to do:
- Make an appointment via the appointment requesting app. Choose the "Exchanging driving licences" option and specify the country of origin of your lost license.
- Be prepared to pay a fee for this procedure, which was EUR 20.81 in 2022. Payments can be made by credit card only, not cash, at the designated offices.
3. Prepare the Required Documents:
On the day of your appointment, ensure you have the following documents and information ready:
- Your completed official application form, which includes a declaration stating that you are not disqualified by court order from driving motor vehicles and mopeds. It should also confirm that you do not hold another EU or EEA license of the same category as the one you are applying for, and that none has been restricted, suspended, or withdrawn.
- Your identity document, which should be an original, current document proving your identity and residence. Acceptable options include a current identity card or passport, along with any other documents requested by the police station.
- Your foreign driving license for replacement (due to wear and tear only).
- Proof of payment of the prescribed fee.
- An original, current color photograph, sized 32 x 26 mm, taken from the front, with your head uncovered and without dark glasses or clothing that might hinder identification.
4. Optional Address Verification:
You can choose to authorize the DGT to verify your address on the electoral roll and for economic activity tax (IAE) online. However, if valid information cannot be traced, you must provide corroborating documentation.
5. Provisional and Definitive Spanish License:
Once you've completed all the necessary steps, the Spanish authorities will issue you a provisional Spanish license, equivalent to the one you held in your country of origin. Your definitive Spanish license will be sent to your home address approximately one and a half months after application. There's no need for you to visit a police station or DGT office again; they will handle the mailing process for you.
In conclusion, while losing your driving license can be inconvenient, the process of obtaining a replacement license in Spain is relatively straightforward for residents. Make sure to follow the outlined steps and have the required documents ready to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience. Safe driving on the streets of Mallorca!
