New weather alert for the first weekend of September
Aemet weather service gives advance warning
The sun, which spoiled Mallorca in recent months, seems to have passed its peak. After the devastating storm last Sunday, the signs are on storm. Once again, the weather service Aemet warns of uncomfortable weather conditions.
Weekend brings rain and wind
In the coming first weekend of September, Aemet forecasts not only a lot of rain, but also a lot of wind. Saturday already indicates uncomfortable weather, but still the wind is mild. Sunday, however, threatens with squalls, especially from easterly directions. Monday also does not promise anything good - it will be wet.
The days when the thermometer reading climbed above 30 degrees are over for now. Nights are already quite cool with 17 degrees, and this value could increase slightly in the coming weeks.
Previous storm caused chaos
The previous Sunday was turbulent. Especially in Palma the situation was problematic, with numerous fallen trees in the city and in the Calvià area. Maritime tragedies also occurred: the British cruise ship"Britannia" collided with a freighter in the port. A sailing yacht with two Germans on board went missing between Menorca and Mallorca; search operations are continuing. At the airport, many flights had to be canceled.
Uncertainty about the strength of the coming storm
It remains uncertain whether the approaching storm will be as severe as the last one. It was only at the last moment that the warning level was raised from yellow to orange last Sunday. These weather phenomena, locally known as"gota fría" (cold drop), are not uncommon in late summer and fall.
For locals and tourists, the message remains clear: caution is advised and it is advisable to constantly check the latest weather forecasts. Mallorca hopes for calmer times.
Update from Saturday 2 September, 10 a.m.
The weather services are unanimously reporting a slight easing of the weather situation for the weekend. Isolated showers are possible, but they will not last long. However, strong gusts of wind can still cause objects to fly around. Swimming in the sea is not advised for safety reasons. We wish you a beautiful first weekend in September.
